It may seem like we live in a world where extreme music has finally achieved a degree of mainstream acceptance. But like so much of modern living, it’s a very superficial state of affairs. Face it - just because Sum 41’s punk-lite graces the pop charts and Avril Lavigne’s state-approved-guaranteed-danger-free meanderings feature on Saturday morning TV doesn’t mean that a musical revolution has finally brought heavy metal to the masses. No – true metal is as underground as it ever was. Yeah, we have figureheads like Ozzy Osbourne, Anthrax and the UK’s own Raging Speedhorn keeping the flag flying, but we’ll always need new blood. And so here’s Area 54.
The London based quartet are metal in the best sense; Intricate and assured musicianship, powerhouse riffing, fluid and emotive soloing over sweeping, often progressive, landscapes and majestic vocals. Since their inception in 1997 they have developed a watertight, yet aggressive sound that combines the intensity of bands like Fear Factory and Megadeth with the melody of Disturbed and other forward thinking post-millennial metal bands.
On April 21, 2003 Area 54 will unleash their second album, the magnificent ‘Beckoning Of The End’ (CSK015). Released on Casket Records (home to Fony and Landmine Spring) and featuring a guest appearance from ex-At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg, it represents a solid statement of intent from the quartet. Area 54 mean business.
‘Beckoning Of The End’ is the follow up to the band’s 2002 debut, ‘No Visible Scars’, (released on Dream Catcher Records). The critically acclaimed record capitalised on the band’s ferocious live reputation, and huge public support (Area 54 were voted ‘Hottest Unsigned Band’ in the January 1998 Kerrang! readers poll and in 2000 they were runners-up to Slipknot in the ‘Best New Band’ category of Metal Hammer’s readers poll).
